Hamburg/Castelrotto – It is St Lawrence’s Day, when shooting stars fall from the sky in South Tyrol. Not one, not ten, but hundreds. These are wonderful, indeed romantic, moments to lie in a summer meadow with a loved one, gaze up at the sky and make a wish. Anyone spending their holiday at the Hotel Schgaguler in Castelrotto at this time has something to look forward to: the evening of 9 August begins with an exquisite dinner in the hotel restaurant, where guests can already admire the special light of the blue hour through the large panoramic windows. Afterwards, it’s a 15-minute walk to the Kastelruth hilltop, the Schererplatzl, a mountain meadow where the hotel has laid out rugs and cushions on which guests can sit comfortably and relax whilst watching the shooting stars pass by – perhaps enjoying a drink at the same time. Up to 100 of these shooting stars fall to Earth every hour around the anniversary of Saint Lawrence’s death (10 August).

Thanks to the low levels of light pollution, the starry sky above South Tyrol is spectacular in any case and attracts visitors from all over the world throughout the year. But the night of the shooting stars is one of the highlights of the summer: tiny dust particles then strike the atmosphere at high speed, causing air molecules to glow. And then it’s time to make a wish!
